Student-interns from different campuses of Philippine Science High School participated in the Third Integrated Pharmaceutical Sciences Laboratory Experience (IPSLE) at the UP College of Pharmacy last June 27 to July 7, 2017. The said program started as a joint venture of the Industrial Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Departments in 2015 and has been a lasting partnership with the Philippine Science High School since. Aside from introducing the students to the pharmacy profession, the program aims to acquaint and train the students on the pharmaceutical sciences. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]By Melissa Marticio, The Pharmakon[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] The University of the Philippines Pharmaceutical Association Student Council (UPPhA SC) organized the very first college-based patient counseling competition Expert Care, a two-part event held on October 21 and 28 with the theme “Advancing the Continuity of Care through Pharmacy Counseling Services.” For the first part of the competition, which was on October 21, students of Clinical Pharmacy 180 (Patient Medication Counseling) participated in the auditions. Teams consisted of pairs of students, one being a patient counselor and the other being an understudy who will assist the counselor during the information gathering phase. Being a much-awaited event where students are cloaked with white coats as a symbol of the profession, the White Coat Ceremony was also given the theme “For the Nation, For the Future: Revitalizing the Heart of Every Pharmacist in Service of the Filipino People”. Four speakers were invited to talk about different topics on mental health: its clinical and spiritual aspects, recreational therapy, and the services offered by the UP Manila Mental Health Services. Talking about the clinical aspect of mental health, Philippine General Hospital Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Chief Resident Dr. Maria Arla Andrea Caralco defined mental health and mental disorders as well as their diagnosis, prevention, and management.
