The UP College of Pharmacy takes immense pride in honoring its distinguished alumnus, Dr. Edgar Felipe U. Leuenberger, with the 2023 Alumni Service Award. A graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Pharmacy program in 1987, Dr. Leuenberger has made remarkable contributions to the field of ophthalmology, establishing himself as a key opinion leader and an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.
He completed his glaucoma fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA in 1998. Dr. Leuenberger was honored as a Balik Scientist Program Awardee in that same year. This prestigious distinction provided a solid start in his career path in clinical research and topnotch patient care.
Dr. Leuenberger currently holds the positions of Director, Glaucoma Fellowship Program, and Co-Director, Glaucoma Service, at the Asian Eye Institute, a world-class eye center. His unwavering commitment to the advancement of eye care is further reflected in his appointment as Chief of Glaucoma Service at both the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERMMMC) and Ospital ng Makati. In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Leuenberger serves as an Associate Professor in Ophthalmology I at UERMMMC College of Medicine, sharing his expertise with the next generation of medical professionals.
Dr. Leuenberger has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed local and international journals in ophthalmology. His groundbreaking research has garnered recognition and accolades, earning him multiple prestigious awards in his field. Such recognition serves as a testament to his exceptional knowledge, dedication, and significant contributions to the advancement of ophthalmology.
Dr. Leuenberger’s passion for achieving equitable eye care in various Filipino communities led him to take on a leadership role as the Past President of the Ophthalmologic Foundation of the Philippines. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives to enhance accessibility of eye care services to the needy.
